Replacing a headlight lens is doable, but it needs special tools and care because the headlamp is sealed at the factory with sealant. This overview helps you decide whether to do it yourself or have a workshop fit it.

Before you start: get the right lens

Check the make, model, year and headlamp type (e.g. halogen / LED, LOW / TOP trim) – the same model can come with different headlamps. See how to choose headlight parts for your car.

Tools you need

  • A headlight oven to warm the headlamp so the sealant softens
  • Opening pliers / prying tools and sealant scrapers to separate the lens and remove the old sealant
  • New headlight sealant to seal out water and dust
  • Clamping pliers to hold the new lens tight while the sealant sets
  • Lint-free cloths and gloves, so no fingerprints or dust end up inside the headlamp

See all tools in Headlamp Opening Tools and Tools & Equipment.

The steps in outline

  1. Remove the headlamp from the car as your model requires (some need the front bumper off)
  2. Remove the bulbs, rear caps and any parts that can't take heat
  3. Warm the headlamp in the oven until the sealant softens – follow the oven's guidance for the headlamp type and never heat so much that plastic deforms
  4. Prise the lens off gradually around the edge, minding the clips and the reflector inside
  5. Scrape the old sealant out of the channel
  6. Clean the inside of the headlamp and lay new sealant in the channel
  7. Fit the new lens, warm again so the sealant bonds, then press or clamp it tight
  8. Let it cool, check for leaks, refit and test every light and the beam aim

Watch out for

  • An incomplete seal lets water or moisture in and causes fogging inside
  • Too much heat can deform plastic parts inside the headlamp
  • Too much force can break clips or the housing

DIY or workshop?

Without a headlight oven or previous experience, we recommend having an experienced headlight workshop do it – you get a tight seal without risking the headlamp. Ask us for a ZETA dealer near you, and see real installations in the Installation Showcase.
