Yellow or cloudy headlights don't just make a car look old – they also make it harder to see the road at night. Here is what causes the problem and how to fix it for the best value.
Why headlight lenses turn yellow or cloudy
Most car headlight lens covers are made of polycarbonate (PC) with a UV-protective coating on the outside. Over the years that coating breaks down because of:
- sunlight and UV radiation
- heat from the bulbs and the engine
- pollution, dust and car-wash chemicals
Once the coating is gone, the plastic starts to yellow, cloud over or craze (fine cracks that look like a spider web).
Do yellow lenses really make headlights dimmer?
Yes. A yellowed or cloudy lens lets less light out and scatters it away from the designed beam pattern. You see less of the road ahead, and oncoming drivers may notice more glare. The worse the lens, the bigger the effect.
Three ways to fix it
1. Polish and re-coat the lens
The damaged surface is polished away and a new coating applied.
- Good for: lenses that are yellow or hazy only on the outer surface, without deep crazing
- Pros: low cost, quick
- Limits: deep damage or crazing usually can't be fully removed, and the lens can yellow again when the new coating wears
2. Replace just the lens cover
The old lens is removed from the headlamp and a new one fitted, keeping the original housing, lighting and internal parts.
- Good for: lenses that are badly yellowed, deeply cloudy, crazed or cracked while the housing and internals are still fine
- Pros: a clear-as-new lens, usually for far less than a complete new headlamp
- Good to know: the headlamp has to be opened, so fitting by an experienced headlight workshop is recommended
3. Replace the complete headlamp
- Good for: headlamps with several problems – broken mounting tabs, worn reflectors or damaged internal electronics
- Limits: the most expensive option, especially for European cars and modern LED headlamps
Which one should you choose?
- Slight haze, no crazing: try polishing and re-coating first
- Heavy yellowing, deep clouding, crazing or cracks with healthy internals: a new lens cover is the best value
- Damaged internals or broken tabs: consider a complete headlamp
